    His old stuff was good but pretty corny, he’s a way better writer + rapper these days and El-P is a much better producer than Necro.

    I like how the people in this post critiquing cage’s clothes are some of the least fashionable people i’ve ever seen in my life. Does he need be wearing oversized jeans with a dirty backwards baseball cap, fat ugly skateboard shoes, and shirt 3 sizes too big for you to like him?

  18. Leak Bros was his crowning achievment, after that he’s been pretty inconsistent. His good tracks are still dope as fuck but tracks like Scenester are easily his worst. People can wear/act how they want, but you can tell by his whole career he’s just been playing gimmicks – he’s pretty good at it actually.

  22. This is a poorly executed critique of how conservative mainstream hip hop is (thanks to noyz for opening me up to this observation). I only have Hell’s Winter, so I’m not a huge Cage fan, but damn, the guy can write. CJ, your rap knowledge runs deep, show the fellas how it’s done and start writing for ugs again.

  26. i think that cage 4 years ago was on coke and the new cage is sober according to reports. There is real life then there is rap. erick serman is gay, 7l and esoteric are nerds, sage francis would punch out 90% of rappers out flavour flav well you know.

  27. I do agree with what he’s saying though, the people I know who play in bands are infinitley more chill than some of the rap heads I’ve met. Still, what made Cage so good was his imagery (to me anyway) and he seems to have gotten away from that and started rapping about his life in rap which is boring. That one track he had about the car crash on Hells Winter was dope but still it’s no Ballad Of The Worms or Delerium.

    Cam – Cage basically pissed on his old fans saying shit like he won’t even sign his old cd’s and that he doesn’t want to rap over samples anymore, dumb shit like that. It’s cool he’s making the people who dismissed him before realize he’s a great lyricist, but I’m with Royal T, I like shit with an edge. Blood Boy is dope but most his new stuff is vanilla.

    This conversation seems a little dated Cage has been headed inthis direction for a few years.

  30. Well yah…but if you tried to get Agent Orange on wax signed (according to him) he wouldn’t; that’s weak no matter how you slice it.

    Give it 5 years once this fad dies out and Cage will be saying shit like “I can’t believe I was being such a fag back then” and hop on the next subculture trend.

    Like I said before, he’s always been gimmicky and he’s really good at it – if he wanted to be the great artist he could be he wouldn’t even rap about reality, just make up stories about strange situations (cause that’s what he’s best at).

What IS funny is how all these people who wouldn’t have paid attention to Cage before because of how dressed/acted are now all on his nuts cause he changed his image, then they get mad at people for making fun of how he dresses now cause that’s what they identify with…so hypocritical, oh well.

  36. The funny thing is that people are acting like this is some big transition but it’s been years in the coming. I’m a pretty different person from what I was ten years ago, and I would expect Cage to be the same way… I think it’s great that he has matured and moved on with his music. If he was still writing the same stuff he was writing with Agent Orange and Movies for the Blind, people would be complaining that he just keeps rapping about the same shit, like they do with Necro.

    Besides, I bet it would get boring for Cage if he continued to do the same thing album after album…

    However, seeing him with that haircut and sweater vest does really accentuate the differences from what he used to be to now… I do agree with whoever said that the Cage of five years ago would likely punch the shit out of present day Cage, but the present day Cage would probably be mocking the Cage of five years ago so he would deserve it…

    That whole sentence is fucking strangely accurate, no wonder that guy went to a mental hospital. Something tells me he’s got some serious internal issues and has no idea who he really is.

    I agree with what you’re saying though, it’s good to evolve as an artist but from judging from Hells Winter, his content hasn’t really evolved that much, he’s still kicking conspiracy theory shit and rapping about how fucked up his family is, but now he’s also kicking shit about the indy rock scene and shit like that. I mean it’s cool he’s biting Slug and all, I just think his ‘change’ or whatever is a little overhyped.

    The main difference from old Cage to now is his production, which he has nothing to do with.

  41. while the video is funny, if you look at it in perspective of his former interviews, its more of him aggrandizing himself. He has been a consistent rapper from beginning to end.

    most people wouldnt care about his change if he didnt mention that:

    1) sampling is wack (no it isn’t)

    2) i dress like this for the girls (bragging to anonymous people about how much you get laid is INSECURE [hence GAY])

    3) my old music was utter trash (first of all it, it wasnt trash, it was creative and flooring, and second of all, when’s the next time your gonna look in the mirror and say “I fuckin hate my new self now, its time for another change.”)

    Cage should stop these interviews and just make music.

    I did find the clip funny, but I find this video appeals mostly to snobbs.

  42. Yeah, that video was pretty lame…. But Cage is one of my favourite rappers, I like his old stuff and his new stuff just as much in different ways. He’s still raw with the lyrics, he’s still got a ton of edge in his delivery, and he’s still creative, he’s just got a different angle on things now… Not better, not worse, just different…
