Funny video of Cage answering interview questions sent in by his fans. [via]
Also check out his myspace for a snippet from his new album, Depart From Me, dropping 2009 on Definitive Jux.
somebody give him some mescaline and a necro beat. i miss cage.
i dont like this guy at ALL
why did cage turn into such a pussy. it’s like it was all an act before.
i’m guessing that pretty soon he’ll be coming out of the closet
His last record was amazing! Sometimes people grow up! Sometimes people change! I can’t wait for the new record!
New Cage > Old Cage
His old stuff was good but pretty corny, he’s a way better writer + rapper these days and El-P is a much better producer than Necro.
I find Cage has just matured over time. Who cares? The old CD’s and 12″‘s still have a tonne of replay value left. Let him do his thing.
the video is funny… and perfect.
Necro gave Cage a couple beats nearly 10 years ago and El-p isn’t his exclusive producer so wtf are you talkin about
Also I just watched that video it was whack, I would like to say Cage is fuckin whack but he is actually a really good rapper so I cant say that, but he still looks acts like a fuckin homo lol
he said….”sometimes you gotta get a little gay”……..i agree with chaps on the ….”people grow up”…..but that quote was suspect!(even if it was a joke)
“non threatening….intellectual hipster rap”……is what these scenster kids love….to each his own…but i’ll be damned if mc ren comes out rockin nutters and cardigans!!!!!
he only released 2 songs over Necro beats, as far as I know. Mighty Mi did most of his good shit, in my opinion.
What’s with the fucking vest/sweater thingy??
Haha, that shits hilarious. For real tho, I know Cage has some personal issues (mental institute and whatnot)…a transformation like this over such a relatively short period of time is further proof. This guy woulda fuckin’ killed on G’s to Gents!
My initial comment, was responding to Ira’s mention of necro, I know what tracks he’s produced for him dummies.
I like how the people in this post critiquing cage’s clothes are some of the least fashionable people i’ve ever seen in my life. Does he need be wearing oversized jeans with a dirty backwards baseball cap, fat ugly skateboard shoes, and shirt 3 sizes too big for you to like him?
cage acts like a herb now
he’s such a sick lyricist its tough to hate on him..
but i’m hating
I like Cage and many different types of sweaters.
Leak Bros was his crowning achievment, after that he’s been pretty inconsistent. His good tracks are still dope as fuck but tracks like Scenester are easily his worst. People can wear/act how they want, but you can tell by his whole career he’s just been playing gimmicks – he’s pretty good at it actually.
oh yah…and this video was not entertaining at all, pretty corny. Why can’t people be funny anymore?
ceej – please post a tutorial on how one dresses in order to please both the ladies and the gents, we’re dying to learn from you. include the number of times you’ve been laid in the last month in your write-up as well. thanks
haha that is fuckin incredible. cage is a genius i’m rolling on the ground laughing.
This is a poorly executed critique of how conservative mainstream hip hop is (thanks to noyz for opening me up to this observation). I only have Hell’s Winter, so I’m not a huge Cage fan, but damn, the guy can write. CJ, your rap knowledge runs deep, show the fellas how it’s done and start writing for ugs again.
i havent heard any of his new joint but i think cage has only gotten better.
didnt find this video entertaining at all tho..
and are people really getting this worked up over a sweater vest, or has some other shit gone down recently?….
If cage from 4 years ago met this cage he woulda beat him down. Leakbros, Hells Winter, Movies For the Blind and the old weathermen shit were all really dope. I think he’s lost his edge which is what made him
i think that cage 4 years ago was on coke and the new cage is sober according to reports. There is real life then there is rap. erick serman is gay, 7l and esoteric are nerds, sage francis would punch out 90% of rappers out flavour flav well you know.
I do agree with what he’s saying though, the people I know who play in bands are infinitley more chill than some of the rap heads I’ve met. Still, what made Cage so good was his imagery (to me anyway) and he seems to have gotten away from that and started rapping about his life in rap which is boring. That one track he had about the car crash on Hells Winter was dope but still it’s no Ballad Of The Worms or Delerium.
Cam – Cage basically pissed on his old fans saying shit like he won’t even sign his old cd’s and that he doesn’t want to rap over samples anymore, dumb shit like that. It’s cool he’s making the people who dismissed him before realize he’s a great lyricist, but I’m with Royal T, I like shit with an edge. Blood Boy is dope but most his new stuff is vanilla.
Hurtbag and epic and sadr, and royal t have really good points.
if he’s healthier and happier, that’s the most important thing.
i was just really surprised.
I got Hell’s Winter Signed by Cage after he said that shit about not signing his old music.
This conversation seems a little dated Cage has been headed inthis direction for a few years.
Well yah…but if you tried to get Agent Orange on wax signed (according to him) he wouldn’t; that’s weak no matter how you slice it.
Give it 5 years once this fad dies out and Cage will be saying shit like “I can’t believe I was being such a fag back then” and hop on the next subculture trend.
Like I said before, he’s always been gimmicky and he’s really good at it – if he wanted to be the great artist he could be he wouldn’t even rap about reality, just make up stories about strange situations (cause that’s what he’s best at).
Its like when someone quits smoking and they hate on smokers all the time, or someone who was a fat and they lost a bunch of weight and they make fun of fat people, good for u cage you turned your LIFE around(Whatever that means), doesnt mean you have to hate on all of your fans and write off your past which is why you are succesfull NOW, people should never forget that shit it’s extremely whack and selfish.
I bet I could get agent orange 12″ signed. I think I forgot to bring that one or maybe I have that one signed I will have to check. Disregard my Hell’s Winter comment that does not even make sense.
What IS funny is how all these people who wouldn’t have paid attention to Cage before because of how dressed/acted are now all on his nuts cause he changed his image, then they get mad at people for making fun of how he dresses now cause that’s what they identify with…so hypocritical, oh well.
A guy could be kicking raps in neon green sweatpants and a housecoat for all I care.
The funny thing is that people are acting like this is some big transition but it’s been years in the coming. I’m a pretty different person from what I was ten years ago, and I would expect Cage to be the same way… I think it’s great that he has matured and moved on with his music. If he was still writing the same stuff he was writing with Agent Orange and Movies for the Blind, people would be complaining that he just keeps rapping about the same shit, like they do with Necro.
Besides, I bet it would get boring for Cage if he continued to do the same thing album after album…
However, seeing him with that haircut and sweater vest does really accentuate the differences from what he used to be to now… I do agree with whoever said that the Cage of five years ago would likely punch the shit out of present day Cage, but the present day Cage would probably be mocking the Cage of five years ago so he would deserve it…
This is for the whores and the kicked over stores
And the 54 dollars in my pocket on tour
This is for the kid who said “yo, you dead!”
And the 54 stitches that he caught in his head
This is for the clowns I beat with no hands
From two OZs down to 54 grams
With two to the face, I’m a basket case
With 54 seconds til outerspace
when he was here he signed ALL my wax
the weathermen shit, movies for the blind, agent orange.
that being said, he definately acted like a douche, but no more than tame one.
old cage seemed more sincere, but who knows that could have been an act too??
“I do agree with whoever said that the Cage of five years ago would likely punch the shit out of present day Cage, but the present day Cage would probably be mocking the Cage of five years ago so he would deserve it…”
That whole sentence is fucking strangely accurate, no wonder that guy went to a mental hospital. Something tells me he’s got some serious internal issues and has no idea who he really is.
I agree with what you’re saying though, it’s good to evolve as an artist but from judging from Hells Winter, his content hasn’t really evolved that much, he’s still kicking conspiracy theory shit and rapping about how fucked up his family is, but now he’s also kicking shit about the indy rock scene and shit like that. I mean it’s cool he’s biting Slug and all, I just think his ‘change’ or whatever is a little overhyped.
The main difference from old Cage to now is his production, which he has nothing to do with.
“A guy could be kicking raps in neon green sweatpants and a housecoat for all I care.”
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I totally want to see that. The only thing that could complete that ensemble is a pair of those L.A. Gear joints with the lights in the heel.
while the video is funny, if you look at it in perspective of his former interviews, its more of him aggrandizing himself. He has been a consistent rapper from beginning to end.
most people wouldnt care about his change if he didnt mention that:
1) sampling is wack (no it isn’t)
2) i dress like this for the girls (bragging to anonymous people about how much you get laid is INSECURE [hence GAY])
3) my old music was utter trash (first of all it, it wasnt trash, it was creative and flooring, and second of all, when’s the next time your gonna look in the mirror and say “I fuckin hate my new self now, its time for another change.”)
Cage should stop these interviews and just make music.
I did find the clip funny, but I find this video appeals mostly to snobbs.
Yeah, that video was pretty lame…. But Cage is one of my favourite rappers, I like his old stuff and his new stuff just as much in different ways. He’s still raw with the lyrics, he’s still got a ton of edge in his delivery, and he’s still creative, he’s just got a different angle on things now… Not better, not worse, just different…
that video was lame, but cage is in my top 5 rappers. Love his new shit just as much as the old, just as everyone else said he matured, and not.
the video is fucking jokes people! hes making fun of foolish questions people ask him and a lot of people here are doing exactly what he making fun of. am i wrong?
I think everybody gets it. what I don’t really get is how he goes from Leak Bros to indie rocker in about a year.
the “interviewer” guy was pretty funny
I finally watched the vid. Some of it was funny, especially the “fat fuck” question near the end.
NATE: Fair enough yeah… but hasn’t he been changing even before Hells Winter
either way, i really dont care. i like his rapping and think his new singing is shitty.
hey guys want to know what i think?!
No but seriously… At least he isn’t wearing sandals!!!! hey?!
Anyway, bragging to anonymous people about anything is what rap’s all about… does that make all rappers “insecure” and, henceforth; GAY??
not that I’m trying to defend this video… cuz I found it stupid except for the part where he turns himself into a bag of chips….
But everyone’s comments about it were more interesting than the video itself. haha.
you guys are talking about cage the same way highschool girls talk about boys that dump them
staas hits the nail on the head
fuck this shit
i dunno i think that’s kinda glib.
when yours or anyone’s favorite musician does a 180 its going to elicit a response from fans. i dont think thats necessarily some man crush nonsense. if this tops 75 comments then mabye…
