Themselves & WHY? – “Canada”

WHY? / Themselves - "Canada"

With an intertwining history between the two groups, dating back to cLOUDDEAD, it’s no surprise that the members of WHY? and Themselves are still friendly and fans of each other’s work – the two bands went into the studio awhile back to lay down this special collaborative track which features all of the members of both groups and vocals from Doseone and Yoni Wolf. Both bands have amazing new LPs out on Anticon in the coming months – WHY?’s Eskimo Snow (out 9.22) and Themselves’ CrownsDown (out 10.20)

  1. Lovin this track! Thanks for the link Noyz! I was hoping for some Canadian dates though. Not even a Montana date 🙁

  2. This shit is so gay. Only gay faggots would like this gay-fag shit. Homos. You are all a bunch of faggots. Beards are for homos. Just kidding. Go Canada! But I don’t like what I’ve heard of Eskimo Snow as much as Apolecia. Maybe in time.

  3. I got a beard and I live in canada. After hearing this I want to move to the united states to track down these cats and shoot them with a harpoon gun.

  4. i thought it sucked, i remember anticon used to be innovative, now they release generic and played out indie shit and people still think of them as avantgarde

    anyways,fuck

  5. lol i didn’t even hear anyone rap on this song just some really terrible singing, guess it doesn’t take much to please the “heads” or whatever nowadays

    yay

    1. yea man, they are totally just trying to please the masses with this one. TOTALLY mainstream, not the kinda stuff REAL music fans like you and I like. Anticon sucks now.

  6. I haven’t heard this song, but I will say that I’m disappointed that a song called “Canada” is being used to promote a tour that doesn’t even hit Canada. What? Why? C’mon. I would have went to see this. Still haven’t seen Dose live yet. The Themselves mixtape was dope and what I’ve heard from the new Themselves album is also dope, except for the one or two singing tracks, that is.

  7. sounds dope to me….but i’m a big why? fan. he’s a talented dude, he even raps once in a great while. ha.

  8. biggest problem with this song. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE FUCK THEY ARE SAYING.

if your gonna sing at least sound clear, don’t mumble a bunch of shit and call it ‘Canada’

  9. Come on dudes, be nice. Just because this song is simple doesn’t immediately mean it is shit. I can hear the lyrics too – not sure why people are having trouble with that.

    “You wanted a man.
    I showed up.
I gave you a rib from my cage.
That rib went bad, you let ’em all rot..
    replaced with tattooed snakes.
May your bones turn to rope and go limp inside you.”

Sorry, but I think that’s pretty fucking beautiful.

Having said that, it is a shame that the band aren’t coming to Canada. It may be that they couldn’t get the funding (these guys earn very, very little) or couldn’t find a good promoter. Contact Anticon. I’m sure it’s not a deliberate decision to avoid Canada. I know at least dose has links there.

    1. I wholeheartedly agree with you…and the lyrics you posted definitely helped clarify that verse and made me enjoy it even more.

I don’t understand why all these fucktards are complaining. Themselves isn’t surprising anyone with their flamboyant vocals on this track and the musical/lyrical genius of both collaborators really shines through in this piece. It was beautifully put together (like the pots and pans beat…who the fuck can’t appreciate that?)

And don’t go blaming anticon. for their new shit, if you’ve heard Themselves and Why?, you should have seen this indie/pop coming.

  10. Anticon is still good and innovative. I like where they’ve gone, and I’m glad they still do it. Even if some of it is gay. And Dose One is one of my favorites, but comes off gay sometimes. And Why? is awesome. And Jel too. And Tobacco.

  11. Is this song being promoted as a rap song? If not, I don’t see the Bodycount comparison.

The new album from Themselves is filled with rapping with lots of crazy beats.

  12. I like this. its rap in a way that i like nate dogg warren g ghetto jam about to slam awol one days of the week kind of way. not as good as sole though. its 2009 listeners need to advance.

  13. in the (modified) words of the angry nintendo nerd…:

THIS SONG IS DIARRHEA COMING OUT OF MY DICK. THIS SONG IS AS APPEALING AS A FUCKIN’ OOZE INFESTED DIRTY FUCKIN’ SEWER RAT SHIT. I’VE HAD MORE FUN PLAYING WITH DOG TURDS. THIS SONG IS AN INSIDE OUT ASSHOLE REGURGITATING PUTRID ANAL FECAL MATTER. I’D RATHER FUCKING YANK ALL THE HAIRS OUT OF MY SCROTUM. I’D RATHER DRINK DIARRHEA VOMITED OUT OF A BUFFALOS ANUS. IT SUCKIN’ FUCKS IT FUCKIN’ SUCKS, IT FUCKIN’ BLOWS ITS A PIECE OF SHIT AND….. i don’t like it.

Anticon has its moments, but this isn’t one of them

  14. ….so nobody else is a little pissed off that these fuckheads are portraying Canadians as bearded plaid wearing lumberjacks…look at that poster, this shit is embarrassing; I’m surprised Chaps and Epic would support this kind’ve shit.

  15. addvice: beards and plaid have been the indie rock uniform for some time… not so much to do with Canadian stereotypes unfortunately. I thought I’d like this song but I can’t really say that I do.

  16. i thought why? was one singer/rapper.. since when did he turn in to 3 people??

dose & jel especially are still really good. i’ll check out the new themselves album

  17. It’s just a song and i like it. I am not offended but i am curious. Who do we hate? the artists? or the song? To clear the air, someone should contact dose one and ask him what the hell this song is really about in its entirety. We want to know because we don’t get it.

  18. dope song.

i dont know if its hip hop, not what id call it, but im getting too old to get all worked up over that shit without feeling completely pathetic…

  19. This song isn’t about Canada. This is no Canada dissong.

It’s about falling out of love with someone and things going sour. “You wanted a man full of more dangerous ways…and you’re showing your pinkest parts in my absence” “You wanted a man, I showed up…and gave you a rib from my cage” “Do you see a cold floor in your future – or do you sleep sounder when the sheets are sour?”.

The rap at the end is…

“Study contemplating the complicated train of events that ends in a final result of men’s flesh becoming stairs.”

Little bit of fangirl info for you – Dose’s ex-fiance is Canadian. Possible inspiration for title?

Also, sod off calling these guys gay. Just because they don’t walk around grabbing their crotches and are somewhat in touch with their emotions doesn’t mean they’re ‘fags’. Neither of them are. And even if they were, it would be pretty sad if you were avoiding their music because they were. Rap fans do seems to have this air of homophobia about them that I just don’t get. Grow up and stop kissing your 50Cent poster…it’s starting to smell.

    1. hahahahahaha okay nerd.

I liked hemispheres by dose and themselves but this shit is talentless dribble.

if you weren’t such a retard on anticons bozack you’d notice people weren’t saying it’s a canada diss track.

this shit sucks sorry, if I wanted to hear singing and not rap I’d rather listen to people that can actually sing. these guys are terrible singers, it always sounds like it’s a joke with them or it’s made by handicap people with no grasp of beat/pitch or common sense. and then fools like you come around and try to justify the bullshit by saying it’s artsy….man there’s 3 year olds with way better singing ability then these guys.

  20. nice speach no one here listens to 50 cent if you don’t like rap people go get some other friends

  21. I didn’t read any of the posts before this, but this song is SUPER GAY. These guys must be a BUNCH OF FAGGOTS. Where do they get off DISSING CANADA? I’d like to see them try to do that to my face. Anyone who likes these guys are FAGGOTS. I’m going to go listen to my 50 Cent albums now. That dude’s definitely no fag!

    1. your sarcasm indicates that everything being said has flown right over your head. i doubt many people here listen to 50 cent on a regular basis. in fact i bet more poeple here listen to anticon more regularly but the fact is that this track consists of people who suck a at singing trying to sing. it ain’t hip hop just cause they used to make hip hop and I would think it’s borderline insulting to people who actually work hard to become good singers that these dudes are making a living off of mock singing and nonsensical lyrics….. just cause shit is bugged out weird doesn’t mean we have to praise it as artsy and avant garde genius.

    2. I was actually mocking Pussy … I mean Kitty. Obviously just because you don’t like this song, or refer to things as “gay” doesn’t mean you listen to 50 cent … I’m with you

    3. “it ain’t hip hop just cause they used to make hip hop”
So stop trying to label it as ‘not-hiphop’ and you wont have to worry about constructing arguments as to why its not-hiphop.

“I would think it’s borderline insulting to people who actually work hard to become good singers that these dudes are making a living off of mock singing and nonsensical lyrics…”
Really? So do you lose sleep at night when you see Madchild (for example) on MTV rapping about nonsensical things like dungeons and dragons..?
And what is so non-sensical about those lyrics..?

  22. my girl came downstairs while i was listening to the song, and asked me, to “shut that shit off”
this is horrible i’m all for the advancement of music, and i like alot of anticons releases but this is just weird for the sake of being weird.

  23. “I don’t understand, how is crossing over to indie rock advancing?”
    How is it not-advancing?
They aren’t staying stationary – this doesnt sound like old Them/Why? neccessarily….so wouldn’t you say they’ve accomplished what they were after with this step in a new direction?

“but this is just weird for the sake of being weird”
Are you joking? You really think they got together, sat down in a room and were like “this sounds great guys…but yo – lets make this shit sound WEIIRRRDDDD..!!”

I dont neccessarily like or dislike this based off of one listen….but I will take a firm stance and say that this shit is 100% more innovative, and creative than the majority of people on here calling them faggots because they cant immediately understand the lyrics of the song.

The lyrics we’re posted above…and they are really good lyrics. It doesnt bother me that they were sung and not rapped, and I feel sorry for people who are that narrow-minded, as they are clearly missing out on a world of great music.

These dudes are hip hop as fuck. Watch Jel’s MPC youtube clips…then tell me the dude doesnt know EXACTLY what he’s doing.
Go listen to Sole’s “Northern Exposure” group album and tell me he’s not capable of killing a RAP track.
Anticon has been putting out an array of dope music for years, and are not afraid to be themselves…very respectable traits.

In short, I dig this shit. Not saying I would drop this at my next show, but I will definitely check out the album. People seem to be to concerned with putting labels on shit, and fitting it into boxes.

    I listen to music.

    1. So the band’s name isn’t Canada? Why do people make songs about ex girlfriends? they don’t deserve the credit.

  24. I have no problem with these guys making this music, personally I don’t enjoy it but that’s neither here nor there.

I do, however, as a life-long fan of hip hop, find it incredibly offensive the amount of people who think that whenever an artist who has previously made rap music starts making an altogether different kind of music that adopts standard conventions of another well-established genre (in this case, a lot of contemporary indie rock sounds fairly close to what these guys are making these days) it’s referred to as ADVANCEMENT for hip hop.

Do we really have such a massive fucking inferiority complex about our artform that our artists have to STOP doing it and START doing something completely different for us to consider it progression? That’s a sad thought to me. It’s just like how every “underground” rapper is basically expected to mention that they don’t even really listen to rap in their interviews.

It’s almost like “Wanna make next-level rap music? Wellll stop rapping start singing, stop sampling, fire your DJ, get a guitarist a bass player and a drummer and you’ll be the nextest shit ever because you’ll be almost advanced enough to be like REAL musicians.”

this statement underlines how so many of us decade plus doodes feel. it’s just fucking sad.

i’ve never seen or heard it articulated so immaculately.

  26. Is this conversation really happening? anticon have been making music for quite a while now you know, and everything said here was already said back in 1999. You’re all complaining as though these are the most popular rappers on the planet and that they’re so influential that they’re single handily changing the definition of hip hop. Who exactly are all these people still using the phrase “advancement of hip hop”? Nobody has said that shit in over ten years. Seriously, why do you give a fuck what genre people label music as? You like a song or you don’t… move on please; not everyone still wishes it was the 90’s.

    1. I just wish they’d rap more. cause i like their raps. with the odd excpetion (post modern pat boones…which they rap mostly in), i don’t like their off beat/pitch singing.

    1. Damn, I miss that site. The review section introduced me to Five Deez. Never fucked with the forum, though. I figure there was a lot of arguing about who’s gay or not. Sounds familiar…
Never been an Anticon fan, ‘cept for a handful of tracks. In retrospect, I gotta give ’em props for doing different shit, even if I didn’t always feel it.
Heh…I just remembered what a clusterfuck the Anticon board was, too. Shout out to DJ Stef!

  27. “Seriously, why do you give a fuck what genre people label music as? You like a song or you don’t… move on please; not everyone still wishes it was the 90’s”
    AMEN.

  28. the argument that hip hop fans are too narrow minded to understand and accept other forms of music is extremely weak. I like good music regardless of what genre it is, the problem with hip hop is that the second anyone voices there opinion on how they don’t like a certain song or group based on the fact that it doesn’t sound like traditional rap music people say you are an “elitest” or not musically “diverse” enough to get it or whatever. Rap is outta control.

  29. Are you not realizing that you can substitute any genre of music into that argument and it would carry the same weight..?
Besides, that was never the argument.
People are on here shitting their pants because this “isnt hiphop enough” for them…..but was this ever marketed as a hiphop song to begin with??
    Didnt think so.

“Sun, Nov 8. Fun Fun Fun Fest – Austin, TX w/ GZA, Melt Banana & Atlas Sound”
    Now THATS a strange line-up..

    1. its probably not marketed as a hiphop song, but noyz posted it on a hiphop website, so I’m surprised YOU GUYS are surprised its getting critiqued this way.

maybe its time to change the “about” description on ugsmag if thats the case.

    2. Why? and Themselves are rap groups. I post news about what rap people are up to. If Terminator X started trying his hand at stand-up comedy and sent me the audio, I would post it on ugsmag even though many people wouldn’t consider his jokes to be hip hop.

  30. The ONLY entitled outlet i have to revenge my failed career, is my rap opinions.

Anticon should stop biting me and start not making rap again.

Too much e and not enough mo.
